SOCIAL PROGRAM
Excursion:
Tuesday, 6th Nov. 13:30 ~ 18:00
Note: We do not go to HIKONE Castle (National Treasure),
because we must walk up and down through a long way there.
We are sorry if you have a desire to go there.
Hikone Castle is located in Hikone city where is 15 min. away by train from Nagahama.
In this year, Hikone is celebrating the 400th anniversary
of Hikone Castle with various events and exhibitions.
See the web site (in Japanese) for more information.
Deep in Shiga, JAPAN (Tentative Schedule)
In this excursion, two volunteer guides and an English-fluent japanese woman provide various supports.

After lunch at the conference venue, we take a bus for this tour and go to Kurokabe square (web site in Japanese). Kurokabe means Black Wall. The old bank building painted in black is a symbol of this square. The building was transformed into a GLASS workshop and a glass souvenir shop.
In Kurokabe square, we visit Kurokabe Museum (web site in Japanese). It is an old traditional Japanese shop (Machiya) built in the late Edo period. The Edo period is from 1600 to 1868. The museum has over 100 glass art pieces especially from Europe.

In Kurokabe square, we also go to Hikiyama Museum (web site in Japanese).
Hikiyama in Nagahama is a moving stage with wooden wheels for Kabuki performed by children.
The festival is held in every April, and one of the greatest Hikiyama festivals in Japan.
In the museum, we find some beautiful Hikiyama and movies of the festival.
We skip this museum, because we do not have enough time to go there.
We take the bus again in order to go to a rural area in Shiga. Takatsuki town is located 30 min. away from Nagahama. In a small temple, Doganji (or Kogenji), we find a beautiful wooden statue of Kannon. Kannon means Goddess of Mercy in Buddhism. The Kannon in Doganji temple was made in 9th century, and one of seven 11-faced Kannon designated as national treasures.

After Doganji temple, we go to Kinomoto town. Kinomoto was a lodging town in the Edo period. In this town, we visit an old Sake celler, Tomita-Syuzo (web site in Japanese), and an old Soy-Sauce maker, Daikou-Shoyu (web site in Japanese). Probably, we must be divided into two groups because of capacities of these shops.

If we have time, we also visit Kinomoto Jizo temple. Jizo means a guardian deity of children. In this temple, we can try to enter the basement corridor in darkness. If we can touch a lock in the corridor, our desires are fulfilled.
If we are lucky, we enjoy a beautiful sunset on the lake on our way back.
The conference dinner starts at 18:00 in the confernce venue.
